The Art of the Written Page · Part One
The frame.
Every beautiful page begins with what you don't write on. The frame is the white space that holds your words, and four decisions shape it.
Margins
Generous and even. An inch of quiet on every side makes even ordinary handwriting look considered. Crowded edges make even fine handwriting look rushed.
Paragraph Spacing
A clear breath between thoughts. Either indent or leave a blank line, but choose one and hold to it; the pattern is what reads as calm.
Visual Balance
Step back and squint. The gray mass of your writing should sit centered in its frame, not sliding toward a corner. Balance is judged before a single word is deciphered.
Page Rhythm
Consistent line spacing, consistent slant, consistent ink. Rhythm is what separates a composed page from a transcript of hurry.
