Word Spacing & Composition

Well formed letters can still make a poor word. Even spacing is optical, not mechanical: balance the white space between letters, not the distance between their edges. Round letters nest close; straight letters need more air. And between words, leave a space about equal to the height of the letter, wide enough to separate, close enough to hold the line together.

OO
Two O's Sit Close
The drills
1
Letter each word twice. DEAR, LOVE, SOON, BEST. Notice how the two O's in SOON sit closer than straight letters ever would.
2
Word spacing. WITH MANY THANKS across the line, then repeated beneath it.
3
Composition from copy. WARMLY and REGARDS, lettered again starting at the marks. Pencil lightly, compare, then commit.
4
The memory test. Before inking, draw each word in your mind: stroke order, direction, and the space each letter needs.
